What we offer

Everything you need for a second shift at life

Housing, work and support come together in one programme, built around lived experience. You get a safe base, a reason to get up in the morning, and people in your corner who understand.

Supported short-term housing

A safe, settled place to live while you rebuild. You'll have your own room in a shared Second Shift house, with staff support and housemates who are on the same road.

  • Your own room in a drug- and alcohol-free house
  • Clear house rules and a proper induction
  • Regular check-ins on how you're finding it
  • A plan for moving on from your first week

Meaningful paid employment

Work is at the heart of Second Shift. We help you get work ready, then into placements with partner employers that can lead to a permanent, paid job.

  • Work trials, work experience and apprenticeships
  • Help with your CV, ID and talking to employers about your past
  • A coordinator who checks in with you and your employer

Peer support

Second Shift is run by people in recovery. Peer mentors walk alongside you, one to one and in groups, and help you stay connected.

Structure & responsibility

A daily routine, your own support plan with goals you choose, and a weekly review to keep things on track.

Moving on to independence

Help finding your own place, setting up bills and budgets, and follow-up calls after you leave. Some go on to become peer mentors themselves.

We're not a treatment centre

Second Shift is the next step after treatment. We work alongside drug and alcohol services and recovery communities, and we're for people who are ready to build routine, take on responsibility and work.

The pathway

One road, at your own pace

Everyone's journey is different, but the direction is the same: from stability to a home and a job of your own.

  1. Recovery

You're in recovery and ready for what comes next.

  2. Safe housing

A room of your own in a supported house.

  3. Connection

Peer mentors and people who've been there.

  4. Routine

Goals, weekly reviews and a daily rhythm.

  5. Training

    The tickets employers ask for.

  6. Work

Placements that turn into paid jobs.

  7. Responsibility

Rent, bills, a job and a home to keep.

  8. Independence

Your own place and your own life. We still check in.

Not everyone follows every step in order. Some people arrive already working, others need longer to settle. Your support plan is built around you.

Referrals

Know someone ready for a fresh start?

We take referrals from professionals and from people themselves. If you're not sure whether someone is right for Second Shift, get in touch and talk it through.

  1. Send a referral

Tell us about the person, their current housing and work situation, and why now. We need their consent before we can go ahead.

  2. A conversation with us

We meet for an initial assessment, wherever suits: our office, a prison or hospital visit, or by phone. It's a chance for them to ask questions too.

  3. A decision, quickly

We let you know if we can offer a place, add them to the waiting list, or point you to a service that's a better fit.

  4. Moving in and making a plan

They move into their room, get a full induction, and agree a support plan with goals for housing, work and life.

Lived experience

Run by recovering addicts, for recovering addicts.

Second Shift was built by people who know what it takes to start again. That's why we focus on what actually helps: somewhere safe to live, something worth getting up for, and people who won't give up on you.

Work

Paid, meaningful work is how independence becomes real. We help people earn it and keep it.

Purpose

Routine, responsibility and goals people set for themselves.

People

Peer support, honest relationships, and a community to belong to after moving on.

Questions

Good to know

Is Second Shift a rehab or treatment centre?

No. We're the next step after treatment. We provide housing, structure, training and work for people who are in recovery and ready to rebuild, and we work alongside the treatment and recovery services people already use.

Can I refer myself?

Yes. You don't need a professional to refer you. Get in touch, tell us a bit about where you are now, and we'll arrange a conversation.

Do I need qualifications or recent work experience?

No. Plenty of people come to us with gaps in their work history. We help with training, tickets, CVs and getting ready for work.

How long can I stay in Second Shift housing?

Our housing is short-term. From the start we work with you on a move-on plan, so that when you leave it's to a settled home of your own.

What happens after I move on?

We stay in touch. We check in after you leave to see how things are going with your home and your job, and you're welcome to stay part of the community. Some people go on to become peer mentors.

Is my information kept private?

Yes. Your records are kept securely and only the staff working with you can see them. We only share information with other organisations when you've agreed to it, or where we have to by law to keep someone safe.
